YOUR HEALTH

"YOUR HEALTH" is an article appeared on the Orange County Register's Health & Fitness page, on 10/1996. Tony Del Pinal is a current Tenshinkai Aikido student, holding a brown belt 2 stripes (kyu 1).

TONY DEL PINAL

PROFILE: Single Dad from Laguna Niguel
AGE: 49
VITAL STATS: 5 feet, 11 inches; 182 pounds
OLD ROUTINE: Sports in school. Because of job and travel, nothing on a regular basis. Did not enjoy machines or weights.
TURNING POINT: Heart fibrilliation. "Everything was OK"; doctor blamed on caffeine, lack of exercise, stress; advised exercise to help with stress.
TODAY: Found school for aikido, a way of harmonizing with the universe. "It's working with other people, a good way for releasing aggression. You don't attack force with force, you redirect it." For three years, has worked out five times a week for an hour and a half, including stretching excercises.
DIET: "I don't diet because of the amount I work out. I don't worry about gaining weight. I can eat what I want, but I do try to stay away from greasy food and take vitamins."
PLUS: Stronger, no more back problems. Helped with stress management. "When I'm driving, I'm not so competitive, I just blend with the motion. I can relax at the dentist."
GOAL: A black belt. "It means you're a serious student."
PHILOSOPHY: "It's important to find the right exercise so that you can motivate yourself to do it."
ADVICE: "Learn to defend yourself. Carry yourself with assurance. Criminals look for someone who may look like a victim."
